“I Lost Over 180 Pounds!”

On January 31, 2004, I had my last supper of deep-dish pizza. The next day was the day I started eating differently for the rest of my life. I saw some significant weight melt off over the first few months, but I wanted more. I knew I had to get active so I took up disc golf and playing tennis.

As the weight continued to come off, I began researching fitness programs and weight-training options. I had always been interested in weight training. However, the last thing I wanted to do was go into the gym without a plan, get hurt and potentially stall my weight loss. I had to be especially careful due to a tender back and numerous foot and knee problems all thanks a lifetime of being overweight.

In April, I discovered Kevin and Appleton Fitness For Life, Inc. Kevin’s methodology of working out once or twice a week at a super slow pace was very intriguing to me. I spoke to Kevin over the phone and based on his knowledge and enthusiasm, I scheduled my first session. I came to AFFL twice a week for the next year and continued with my other activities and new eating habits. I ended up losing a total of 180 lbs in just less than two years!

I exceeded my goal weight about 3 times. Of course, EVERYONE says the hard part is keeping it off. The thought of maintaining a weight terrified me. I think that is why I kept adjusting my goal weight. I was afraid to stop losing weight and afraid my accomplishments would allow temptation to creep in.

That is when Kevin and I kicked it into high gear. Kevin changes up my workout frequently. He doesn’t allow me to get bored or my body to get “used to” a routine. Kevin has performed body composition tests so that I can see my body fat to muscle ratio. As a numbers guy and goal-oriented person, this just adds to my motivation.

In my opinion, the MedX equipment at AFFL is simply the most effective, safest, and efficient way to build muscle and lose fat. No other gym even comes close.

It is September of 2008, and I am still hovering around my 180 lb weight-loss. Most of my efforts these days go towards building muscle. I am enjoying life and learning more and more about health. My foot and knee problems have completely vanished and my back is stronger than ever. I have even been able to supplement my AFFL workouts at my own gym by applying the knowledge gained from Kevin. “Life got in the way, I was way too busy.   Those were the excuses I used for letting myself go from 180lbs 10 years ago to 251lbs.  When I would attempt to work out on my own, I would end up quitting due to knee pain and sometimes would struggle to walk for days afterwards.  I knew I needed help, but with the condition I had allowed myself to get into, I was embarrassed to go to a gym.

“Sometimes a bit of bad news can be an inspiration.  About 2 ½ years ago, during my annual physical, I was told I had to change my lifestyle.  I was quite worried, but also determined to heed my doctor’s warning.  With the encouragement from my family and friends, I set a goal to regain my lost strength and energy.  My first stop was at Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. and a meeting with Kevin.  It didn’t take long to know that I had come to the right place to achieve what I was looking to achieve.  AFFL was that place!

Kevin sat down with me and we discussed my situation.  First of all, I wanted to add quality to my earthly joys of being a husband, father, and grandfather.  Also, as an avid, lifelong golfer, I wanted to regain the form I’d lost.  He put together a core-strength and conditioning program that allowed me to get my game back to where it was when I was 40 years old.  In fact, I was fortunate enough to win our Club Championship this past summer, being the oldest ever to do so at the ripe age of 66.  I owe it all to the interest that Kevin and his super-duper staff have shown in me.

“I remember I sat in the parking lot of Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. thinking “do I really want to do this?”  A friend of mine said “Go see Kevin – he’s great”.

I thought about my bad knees from playing football and from being too heavy.  I thought about how my back and legs would occasionally get sore for the same reasons.  I was tired of it but didn’t know how to change it.  Those facts along with my friend’s referral got me to turn off the car and walk through the front door.  It was one of the best decisions of my life.

I was fortunate that Kevin didn’t have an appointment when I walked in, so he showed me the facility and talked to me about the AFFL process and why it was different.  He talked to me about slow motion strength training and cardio intervals and how these were a better way than some of the traditional means of exercising.

I had always been active, had been to the traditional places – gyms, YMCA etc, but none of it really helped me change my lifestyle.  After talking to Kevin,  I thought it was worth the shot, so I signed up for a package that included personal training and open access.

In my first few sessions I noticed the difference.  I learned the right way to work out that would help challenge my muscles but not beat up my joints.   When an exercise didn’t work with my knees, he found another way for me to strengthen the muscles without the strain on my knees.

Here are the things that are different about AFFL that have helped me be successful:

Accountability: I have never held myself accountable for my weight goals in the past.  Incorporating a personal trainer helped bring that home.  I felt that not only was I accountable to myself, but I also felt accountable to my trainers – I didn’t want to let them down.

Facility: Convenient.  Never too crowded for me to get done what I need.  I can get appointments when it works for me.

Equipment : The 12 minute cardio intervals provide a great workout without feeling like you’re there forever.  There is enough variety in the equipment to keep it interesting and not get burned out. The strength equipment is state-of-the-art and clean.  The Exerbotics equipment helps you exercise at the right pace with the right effort to challenge you as you progress.

The AFFL Eating Plan:  I don’t want to call it a diet, it is more of changing what you eat and looking differently at the effects your choices have on you.  Yes, it changes your diet and yes it is hard at the beginning.  But until I put this together with the exercise nothing worked well or long term.  If you follow the principles, you can have enough flexibility to still enjoy eating and get in a habit of adjusting your lifestyle.

Inspiration and Encouragement:  From the trainers and from the other people at AFFL that are changing their lives (and of course my family and friends).  THANK YOU ALL!!!

Results:  To date I have lost around 70 lbs.  Probably the best feeling was going to Great America with my family this summer and fitting on all the rides – many of which I was too big to fit on in summers prior.  I’d have to go through the humiliation of telling my kids that I couldn’t go on the ride with them because I was too big.  So I’d wait at the ride exit, or worse, get up to the front of the line with them and couldn’t get the seatbelt to close and have to get off.  Never again!

I’m certain that had I not stepped through the door at AFFL I’d be the same frustrated person I had always been.  My hope is that at least 1 person will read this and have the same inspiration that I did.”

I have MS and hurt my back two years ago, since then; I have been in a lot of pain and have muscle spasms. I wish I had known about AFFL earlier. I have become so much stronger in the few months that I have been working out with Kevin at AFFL, and the pain and muscle spasms are not even half of what they had been. I had been looking for some sort of program that I could work with because of my limitations. Nothing else was helping, physical therapy was much help nor was the medication that I was taking. “Right around my birthday in early February, I decided to pick up the phone and set up a free consult with Kevin. After all, despite my prayers, time refused to stand still, and subsequently my age followed suit.

Like many women my age I was low on energy, woefully out of shape, and not eating healthy foods. Mostly though, emotionally, I was weary of not liking what I saw every-time I looked in the mirror. A girl can only take so much of that. It was time to DO something to improve the quality of my life.

August 9th 2015 was the 6th month mark of my membership with AFFL and I am very pleased with my results. After years of weight loss difficulty and frustrating pIateaus, I have lost a total of 37 pounds and three pants sizes! Engaging in a program designed specifically for ME that includes a realistic sustainable healthy eating program, meaningful cardio using intervals, and slow-motion strength training, has been the key and changed so many things in my life.

In the beginning I began to see the weight coming off. During the third week I was surprised and a bit upset to see the number on the scale not budge for over two weeks! I remember thinking “been there, done that” and started to doubt my ability to continue. That’s when Kevin told me that I didn’t have to be perfect, just consistent with my efforts, and that if I just stayed the course further success was a sure thing. So, I continued my healthy eating, and exercise, and the next week I was down 3 pounds and have been losing ever since! He was right!

Other highlights include being able to use state of the art equipment that is easy to use, and low impact on my body without sacrificing building muscle, or getting my heart rate up.

AFFL doesn’t feel like a conventional gym does. It’s a place where you feel at home. There is definitely a family feeling that develops over time with the others who are members. It’s a place with on site professional guidance and accountability. AFFL sets you up to succeed.

I can now get down on the floor, and up from the floor without pain and loss of circulation in my legs.

I have much better balance, muscle definition in my arms and legs, and my pants no longer leave indentations on my abdomen because they are too tight. No more jumping up and down to put on my jeans, they just slide on!

The arthritis in my lower back is much more manageable because of all the strength training and targeted stretching I do.

Incredibly, at my last doctor appointment, the results of my thyroid test clearly indicated my thyroid is functioning much more efficiently. The change is so great that my doctor lowered the dosage considerably on the medication I need to take!

“I Lost 20 Pounds in 6 Weeks!”

“Two years ago I had a problem and it seemed the only thing that would help it was something radical.  It really started way back in my twenties, but now thirty years and many treatment plans later, it looked like the only thing left was surgery.  You guessed it; I had a very bad back.  Many times during those thirty years my back would slip out and I would be on the floor in terrible pain.  It would take weeks before I could get back to normal living.

After living with constant pain and stiffness for almost a year and a half, it seemed I was out of ways to treat it non-invasively.  My surgeon said they could try steroid injections to alleviate the pain, but there was a lot of disc degeneration and if that didn’t work the only option remaining would be a spinal fusion.  I already had a fusion on my neck so I knew what that involved.

Then one day I was going down Capitol Drive and saw a scrolling LED sign that said something about proper exercise as a way to treat back pain.  I looked up the Appleton Fitness for Life website and out of sheer desperation I scheduled a free consultation with Kevin, the owner.  He explained to me the science behind his spinal rehab methods and the use of his specialized equipment.  I had nothing to lose so I began the program.

I won’t lie and tell you that one week later I was completely pain free, but within a few weeks I had a noticeable improvement.  Within a few months I was doing things pain free that I hadn’t been able to do for a very long time.  I stuck with the program, which by the way doesn’t involve long hours in a gym, but rather a few sessions each week of concentrated and purposeful strengthening while using the AFFL equipment.

After a couple months of training with Kevin, I started exercising on my own again, but continued going to AFFL twice a week to strengthen my total body, including my back.  My back is virtually pain free!  I haven’t had a major episode in over two years…what a blessing!  I thank God for leading me to AFFL and I would highly recommend it to anyone with back pain.

One other side note to mention…recently, I wanted to get a little more serious about losing weight, but I really needed a plan that would work.  Appleton Fitness for Life was offering its clients a plan and a few incentives to get on board, so I tried it.  I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks!

“I made the brave leap of faith in July, 2013.  Now in November, 2014, I am 25 pounds lighter, both physically and emotionally.  When you really think about it, there is a lot of negativity attached to the excess fat in our bodies.  I needed help to get rid of it and Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. turned out to be the best place for me to do that.

First, I met Kevin who is the owner and just an overall fantastic person.  The training sessions led by Kevin and “the Michelle’s” were individualized and challenging, but not more than I could handle.  I quickly learned about appropriate portion sizes and calorie control which has been extremely valuable to my health and to my weight loss.

I refused to follow the dietary plan proposed to me (because I’m just ornery like that), but even by accepting the basic nutritional ideas shared with me, I was able to make some drastic changes in the way I consumed food.

“I had been working out at AFFL for about 12 months and lost around 30 lbs just based on my increased activity.  However, my weight loss had been stagnant for about the next 6 months and knew I needed to do something with my nutrition to further my weight loss.  It was at this time that the AFFL Fall Fitness Challenge was introduced.  I debated about joining it for a week before deciding to give it a try, and am I ever glad I did!

The meal plans that were provided were well laid out and provided enough variety and “cheat” days at just the right times where I was starting to get to the point of wanting to quit the plan.  It definitely took commitment to stay with the plan at times, especially during the beginning of the holiday season; however, when I went for my weekly weigh-in, the results I was seeing would provide that extra bit of motivation to stick with it.

“A few months following a back surgery that I needed, I was ready to get myself into shape again.  I knew I needed to do something safe and thought the accountability and guidance from a good personal trainer would help.  Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. provided just what I was looking for.

Since I put on a few pounds following my surgery and throughout the holidays, I really needed to focus on my diet, as well as a good exercise program.  AFFL had a Fitness Challenge that I thought would be a great motivator so I gave it a try.

The nutrition program worked very well for me, and although it was work and required a change to my normal eating habits, I found it quite easy to follow and very effective.  The exercise program focused primarily on slow-motion strength training and cardio intervals, both of which I felt kept me safe, given my recent surgery, but also allowed me to exercise at a high-intensity, which I loved!

The exercise environment is very nice, as well.  Not a big, crowded gym, but rather a more comfortable, almost family-like setting.  You won’t find a better equipped training facility, either.  The quality of the exercise equipment is unsurpassed and the AFFL protocols always make me feel like I am able to train safely, yet at a meaningful level of effort.

Overall, I lost almost 21 pounds and an extraordinary 7.4% body fat in just two months!  I am very happy to know that I gained a few pounds of muscle mass, too, especially since I know that it is so common to lose muscle while trying to lose body fat…I guess I have the strength training to thank for that.

“It’s always been important to me to remain physically active and try to live a healthy lifestyle.  I started running many years ago to stay in shape for our family’s annual mule deer hunt in the mountains of Colorado, an adventure that requires considerable lung capacity. While I had a regular cardio routine that included running and aerobic classes, somewhere along the line my long standing regimen of cardio activities was lacking impact.

At 48 years of age I had hit a plateau, what I had been doing for years wasn’t really doing anything anymore.   I heard about Appleton Fitness for Life Inc. and their slow-motion strength training, and stopped in to learn a little more about how it could help me overcome this frustrating standstill I had been experiencing.  After a consultation and tour of the training studio, I decided to give it a try.

The AFFL exercise setting is very comfortable and I am very impressed with the equipment, as well as how it is used.  I always feel safe and am able to train at a high level of intensity, which is important to me.  Adding the slow-motion strength training to my exercise program has definitely made a difference in my running, it’s increased my running pace by over a minute per mile and I have since completed my first full marathon.  It has also helped my bones and joints to stay healthy.

The personal trainers are great. I have been going to AFFL for 3 years now and my personal goals continue to evolve over time.  I really appreciate their willingness to change up my training sessions to best target my newest goals and continue to challenge me.

“I Lost 20 Pounds in 6 Weeks!”

“Two years ago I had a problem and it seemed the only thing that would help it was something radical.  It really started way back in my twenties, but now thirty years and many treatment plans later, it looked like the only thing left was surgery.  You guessed it; I had a very bad back.  Many times during those thirty years my back would slip out and I would be on the floor in terrible pain.  It would take weeks before I could get back to normal living.

After living with constant pain and stiffness for almost a year and a half, it seemed I was out of ways to treat it non-invasively.  My surgeon said they could try steroid injections to alleviate the pain, but there was a lot of disc degeneration and if that didn’t work the only option remaining would be a spinal fusion.  I already had a fusion on my neck so I knew what that involved.

Then one day I was going down Capitol Drive and saw a scrolling LED sign that said something about proper exercise as a way to treat back pain.  I looked up the Appleton Fitness for Life website and out of sheer desperation I scheduled a free consultation with Kevin, the owner.  He explained to me the science behind his spinal rehab methods and the use of his specialized equipment.  I had nothing to lose so I began the program.

I won’t lie and tell you that one week later I was completely pain free, but within a few weeks I had a noticeable improvement.  Within a few months I was doing things pain free that I hadn’t been able to do for a very long time.  I stuck with the program, which by the way doesn’t involve long hours in a gym, but rather a few sessions each week of concentrated and purposeful strengthening while using the AFFL equipment.

After a couple months of training with Kevin, I started exercising on my own again, but continued going to AFFL twice a week to strengthen my total body, including my back.  My back is virtually pain free!  I haven’t had a major episode in over two years…what a blessing!  I thank God for leading me to AFFL and I would highly recommend it to anyone with back pain.

One other side note to mention…recently, I wanted to get a little more serious about losing weight, but I really needed a plan that would work.  Appleton Fitness for Life was offering its clients a plan and a few incentives to get on board, so I tried it.  I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks!

I’ve always been a big person. I’ve had neck and back problems for 25 years due to various accidents. I was diagnosed with a thyroid disease about 4 years ago. Then about 2 years ago, I developed high blood pressure. That’s when I decided I had to change my lifestyle.

I tried to work out and lose weight on my own, but I didn’t see the results I was looking for and decided to look at professional help.

I passed AFFL on my way home from work a few times and decided to see what they had to offer.

I met with Kevin and was impressed with the facility and the approach AFFL takes towards fitness. There wasn’t that “feel the burn” and run 20 miles a day attitude.

With my neck and back problems, I liked the slow and constant approach to both cardio and strength training.

Overall, I’ve lost 139 pounds, and 112 pounds since starting with AFFL in June of 2011.

My neck and back have not felt this good for a long time. My blood pressure is starting to get back to a more normal level. And I’m currently off medications for my thyroid disease.

“I feel my journey of obtaining a healthy lifestyle is one of many, which is about a woman, over 40, and mother of three.  I was a huge “Yo-Yo” dieter and actually had boxes of my “fat” clothes and “not so fat” clothes that were alternated depending where my weight was at in that time of my life.

I have tried several different fad diets, supplements and cleanses.  None of them were anything that was long lasting or obtainable.  So after several attempts, working odd shifts to help utilize minimal amounts of daycare so I could be home with my kids, I had started to accept that this was a typical body and lifestyle of a 40+ woman.  Heavy, bulky clothes, uncomfortable, frumpy and I began to settle in and started to accept that this is how it must be.

Settling in resulted in my weight rising to 206 lbs and a client asking me the embarrassing question, “So when are you due?”  That was a reality that I knew I needed to face.

A shift began to occur,  I sent my baby off to kindergarten, some of my mommy duties subsided and there was a window of opportunity for some “me” time.  I felt inspired and signed up for a local gym membership and the journey began.  Well, not really.  Several times I drove around in my fitness gear, running errands, with intentions of fitting that work out in, with only achieving 2 visits in a 3 month period.  I considered it a waste of money, cancelled my membership and was back to square one.

By now I was engulfed in hockey season.  My 2 oldest boys and my little girl all play.  The boys are excellent skaters because of all of their hard work and effort they put in to it.  It is our family motto, “To push hard and always give your best”.  Hmmm, the question remains… “was I living up to our family motto?”

As the kids get older and are more physically active,  I began to wonder, will I be able to keep up on our family hikes, kayaking, and other adventures?  All of this mixed in with a few “scary” doctor appointments (everything is now fine), pushed me into a panic mode of really assessing my lifestyle and taking action towards preventive measures to aid in my health.  To aid in a better, “ME”!

Appleton Fitness for Life, Inc. was recommended to me years ago and I had heard many good things about it.  I made a decision to go for it!  A new beginning…..Yes, it was a financial commitment, but you can’t put a price on preventive healthcare.

AFFL has a very quaint, comfortable atmosphere so I didn’t feel at all intimidated during my work out sessions.  The owner, Kevin, and the two trainers, both named Michelle, are very helpful, friendly, filled with tons of knowledge to help you obtain your goals and continually keep you motivated to achieve success in your new lifestyle.

I lost over 30 lbs in 10 weeks and feel so much stronger, healthier, and energetic than ever before.  In the mornings on the weekends, I have begun to run with my husband while the kids ride their bikes.  It has become a family affair.  Or I have just finally become part of the family motto.  Yes, I still have some more weight that I want to lose and I want to be more toned, but I feel this journey has been different. “Appleton Fitness for Life was exactly what I needed!  My health and fitness level had been on a significant downward spiral.  In October my Mom was hospitalized with a serious illness.  I spent 6 weeks sitting at her bedside in the ICU.  My nutrition consisted of whatever was in the nearest vending machine and the only exercise was walking up to her room and back.

“I have strength trained off and on for most of my life.”

I have strength trained off and on for most of my life, always giving up because of some injury. I have tried most of the facilities in the area. The equipment was not always user friendly and sometimes not in good repair. The staff was not always available when I needed help &/or not always real knowledgeable. I heard about AFFL and decided to give it a try, after all, what did I have to lose? My intent was to train for a few months to learn proper form, and then go out on my own and try again at another local facility. One and a half years later, I’m still at AFFL. The reason for this is because of the superior workout equipment, the private one-on-one setting, with coaching to always improve my workouts and to do my very best. Not having participated in any structured physical activity since high school, I vowed when I turned 50 I’d start an exercise program. Having made the same promise at 51 and at 52, I decided that at age 53, it was probably time to start. For several months, I asked a lof of questions and did a lot of research on exercise equipment and trainers. I found Kevin McKee and AFFL, and knew that it was the perfect place for me. I began both quick and effective personal training. AFFL has the latest top-notch equipment which has made my lower back stronger than it has been in years. When I took a vacation in Spring, I wanted to continue my training. I found a Personal Trainer at the resort, but he didn’t even come close to the quality and care Kevin provides. I was glad to come back home and start training at AFFL again. I am able to fit exercise around my schedule. I’ve noticed greater flexibility and have more energy. I started the CORE Training program with AFFL in December of 2007. At 61 years old, 242 pounds, and not having participated in any consistent exercise program for about 25 years I thought it would be a good idea to give it a try.
